Goodbye Super Pickle

Last night Hal and Mal’s hosted a going away party for a good friend.  I took a few pictures, several of which caught people mid-laugh, mid-bite, mid-sentence, etc.  So, if there is a less than flattering image of yourself you would like me to remove from the album just let me know.  But if you are one of those people who thinks they look good with an entire meatball in your mouth, enjoy!

Exploitation

_dsc4010.jpg

I read a list of dos and don’ts for graduate studies photographers a while back, and thought about the rules I had broken, the rules famous photographers have broken, and the rules you see people break all the time.  One of those rules is about photographing indigent people, something I have seen done a lot, and something I occasionally do.  I never intend to print or have a show of images of the homeless, but occasionally when out photographing something else if I have someone ask me for money I will make a trade for photographing them.

Sometimes I worry I am being exploitive, or in some way fostering exploitation.  What if someone really likes the image at the beginning of this post and decides to do a series of homeless people.  Does Jackson, Mississippi need increased awareness of the homeless?  Or would any images of that kind be exploitive?

What if we put the same question to images of Katrina:  was there a point where the media coverage was so complete that any further images of the disaster became exploitive?  Or was it such a significant event that it needed as much documentation as possible?

Found: Nat Light Can

If you or someone you know has lost a full can of Natural Light, please send me your name and contact info, or the name and contact info of the person you believe lost this full can of Nat Lite. The can was separated from its owner sometime early Sunday morning, and although it is now empty, it still would very much like to be reunited. Local crime scene investigators believe it may have became lost after slipping from its owners hand while the aforementioned owner was demonstrating a pitching style out the window of a moving car. Again, if this sounds like your can, or you have a good idea whose can this is, please don’t delay the reunion any longer.

Happy Birthday Mom

Yesterday was my mother’s birthday, and yet again she was willing to let me point the camera at her.

Jack Recap

Jacktoberfest went well: Koi had a good crowd, lots of beer was sold,  lots of brats were eaten, and lots of art found new homes.

Jacktoberfest will be going on today from 11am until after 10pm tonight on Congress Street in downtown Jackson. There will be art, music, and food (mainly of the meat variety).

Steichen Retrospective

In Memoriam by Edward Steichen 1904

Edward Steichen at Jeu de Paume. Times Review. The show is supposedly a massive retrospective covering all the many faceted aspects of his photographic career, unfortunately only a few images are available online. However, Jeu de Paume does have an informative and well written biography online.

Bridal Portraits

A couple of nights ago I photographed a bridal session, and I am very happy with the resulting images. I did find myself occasionally wishing the studio was just a couple of feet wider, or a few feet longer so I could have a little more negative space below the train, but I think there will always be those wishes . . .
